The Great Volcano Route
For experienced hikers and nature lovers seeking a real challenge, the Great Volcano Route on La Palma is an absolute must. This 17-kilometer-long trail takes you over the volcanic peaks of the Cumbre Vieja, one of the most active volcanic zones in the world, offering spectacular insights into the island’s geological past.
Starting Point: Refugio El Pilar
The hike begins at the picnic and recreation area Refugio El Pilar, at an elevation of 1,450 meters. From here, you start your journey into a fascinating volcanic landscape that stretches like a string of pearls along the Cumbre Vieja. Over 120 volcanoes shape this route, telling the story of an island in constant transformation.
Through the Volcanic Wilderness
The trail initially leads through a shady pine forest, offering breathtaking views of the Aridane Valley and the Cumbre Nueva. The Birigoyo Volcano, whose eruption more than 6,000 years ago reshaped the landscape, is just the first of many you’ll encounter on this hike. The higher you climb, the more dramatic the scenery becomes until you eventually leave the pine forest behind and continue across bare volcanic rock.
Passing Hoyo Negro
A highlight of the tour is Hoyo Negro, a 140-meter-deep crater formed during a massive eruption in 1949 that spewed ash and lava. Here, there’s an option for hikers who prefer a shorter route to return to Refugio El Pilar.
The Highest Point: Deseada Volcano
For those committed to completing the full route, the path continues to the Deseada Volcano, the highest point of the Cumbre Vieja at 1,945 meters. In clear weather, you’re rewarded with stunning views of the entire island, and you may even spot the neighboring islands of El Hierro, La Gomera, and Tenerife.
Descent through the Witch’s Plain
After the summit, the trail descends through the so-called Witch’s Plain, heading towards the almost barren, red-tinted Martín Volcano. Here, you cross lava fields dating back around 11,000 years, adding to the dramatic scenery. The route then leads back into the pine forest, where narrow paths and forest trails continue towards Fuencaliente.
Refreshment in Fuencaliente
Exhausted but happy, the hike ends at the traditional Bar Parada in Fuencaliente. Here, you can enjoy a well-deserved break with Palmero coffee and the famous almond cookies before the return transfer is arranged.
