Adventurous Tunnel Tour
For those seeking adventure and wanting to experience La Palma’s wild nature up close, the tunnel tour in the laurel forest of Los Tilos is just the thing. This spectacular hike takes you through one of the most pristine landscapes on the island, passing water channels, gorges, and springs, and through 13 tunnels carved by hand into the rock.
Starting the Adventure by Jeep
The tour begins with a 50-minute Jeep ride through the impressive laurel forest of Los Tilos. This globally unique primeval forest is a botanical highlight of the Canary Islands and immerses you in an almost mystical atmosphere. The Jeep ride alone is an experience, but the real adventure begins after that.
The Path Along the Water Channels
On foot, the path leads along an old water channel, taking us through deep gorges and past steep rock faces. The view of the rugged landscape and the over 2000-meter-high caldera walls is breathtaking. Here, you encounter La Palma’s raw and untamed nature, which is both challenging and beautiful.
Tunnel Experience in the Heart of the Rock
The real highlight of the tour is the 13 tunnels we pass through. Equipped with flashlights and helmets, we enter these dark, hand-carved passages. The longest tunnel measures 364 meters, and it’s an unforgettable feeling to traverse the narrow tunnels and darkness before stepping back into the light.
At the end of the last tunnel, a special surprise awaits: at the Marcos spring, you’re greeted by a small, natural waterfall flowing from all sides, offering a refreshing “shower.”
The Climb to Cordero Spring
After the refreshing cool down, a steep path leads to Cordero Spring, located in the midst of this impressive nature. The ascent is challenging, with about a 45-degree incline, requiring both fitness and sure-footedness. But the effort is rewarded with a unique natural experience.
Descent Through the Water Gorge
The demanding descent through the Barranco del Agua, the so-called water gorge, is the last adventure of this tour. Here, you’ll face over 1000 meters of altitude to conquer as the path leads through the dense laurel forest of Los Tilos. The lush vegetation and the forest’s unique atmosphere accompany you on this challenging but rewarding descent.
