Pine forest at Riachuelo

Hiking through the Caldera de Taburiente: From La Cumbrecita to Virgen del Pino

The Caldera de Taburiente is a true natural gem of La Palma, and this hike from La Cumbrecita to the Virgin of the Pine takes us through the fascinating flora and landscapes of this region. At an altitude of 1,350 meters, we start our adventure, experiencing spectacular views and the impressive nature of the island.

Starting at La Cumbrecita: The Gateway to the Caldera

Our path begins at the La Cumbrecita viewpoint, the “little roof” of the Caldera. From here, we have breathtaking views of the island’s highest peaks and the deep Caldera de Taburiente. Our guide provides insights into the geological formation of this crater and highlights the unique aspects of the landscape before we continue southward.

Through the Riachuelo Valley and along the Cumbre Nueva

The trail leads us through the tranquil Riachuelo Valley, always in the shadow of the Cumbre Nueva. The well-maintained path rewards us with views of the Aridane Valley and the Cumbre Vieja—a panorama that makes every step a delight.

On many days, we can witness the awe-inspiring natural spectacle of the cloud waterfall. Mist spills over the mountain ridges of the Cumbre Nueva, giving the landscape an enchanting appearance.

Nature and History in the Pine Forest and Along the Gallery Path

Our route runs through a lush pine forest adorned with rock roses and other typical Canary Island plants. This part of the trail is known as the “Gallery Path” because we pass by old water tunnels—remnants of La Palma’s long history of water management.

We hike up and down, passing through gorges and towering rock walls that make us pause and marvel.

A Sea of Almond Blossoms

Pine forest at Riachuelo

In the final quarter of our journey, we are accompanied by a beautiful almond grove. From January to March, the trees bloom in bright white and pink, creating a scene that is nearly impossible to describe in words.

Final Destination: The Virgen del Pino and Its Legend

Our destination is the oldest pine on the Canary Islands, standing majestically in front of a small chapel. Here, at an altitude of 850 meters, we find the Virgen del Pino, the Virgin of the Pine. Our guide shares the legend of this sacred apparition and the significance of the Virgin to the island’s inhabitants. A well-deserved coffee completes the day, allowing us to reflect on our experiences.
