Cloud Waterfall Hike
Wednesdays
This hike takes you through some of La Palma’s most stunning landscapes, passing fragrant pine forests, crossing volcanic fields, and entering the mysterious laurel forests. With a bit of luck, you might witness the rare phenomenon of the cloud waterfall gently flowing over the Cumbre Nueva.
The Hiking Route
The 8-kilometer hike begins in the beautiful Parque Natural de Cumbre Vieja, where you’ll ascend through the fragrant pine forest, walking on soft pine needles. As you climb, breathtaking views of the surrounding volcanoes and the vast plains of Los Llanos de Aridane unfold. In good weather, you can marvel at the mesmerizing cloud waterfall cascading majestically over the Cumbre Nueva (1500m) – a natural spectacle that will leave you speechless.
A Volcanic Heritage
After about an hour of hiking, you’ll reach a vast field of black volcanic ash, providing a dramatic contrast to the lush vegetation. Ahead, you’ll see Montaña Quemada (Burnt Mountain), a volcano that erupted shortly before the Spanish conquest of the island. Its ash and lava have transformed the landscape into a surreal, almost otherworldly scene.
Entering the Laurel Forest
After crossing the volcanic landscape, you’ll descend into the dense, mysterious laurel forest of El Paso. This little-known forest is a magical place that looks as if it came straight out of a fairy tale. The trees are covered in thick lichens and mosses, mushrooms sprout from the ground, and natural arches made of tree heather give the forest an enchanted atmosphere. The steady descent through this jungle-like forest feels like entering another world.
